Madden NFL 20

is the best-selling game of August 2019, repeating its victory after being the top-selling game in July of this year, while also becoming the seventh yearly Madden entry in a row to top the charts in August. As reported by the NPD Group, Madden is now the third-best-selling game of 2019, trailing behind Kingdom Hearts III and Mortal Kombat 11. Minecraft, interestingly, had its all-time high placement on the NPD best-sellers chart, coming in as the second-best-selling game for the month of August.

Our Madden NFL 20 review said this year’s entry had some of the best moment-to-moment gameplay in the series. However, our reviewer found other parts like the Franchise mode to be somewhat lacking.

Also of note in the top 10 — five of the 10 top-selling games in August were Nintendo Switch exclusives, with Astral Chain, which debuted last month, joining the list at No. 10. Fire Emblem: Three Houses came in at No. 4, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at No. 5, Super Mario Maker 2 at No. 6, and Mario Kart 8 at No. 7. Astral Chain is the only new game in the top 10 for the month of August.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch was August’s best-selling console and remains the best-selling console of 2019 so far. However, overall spending on hardware fell 22 percent year-over-year, while the Switch is the only hardware to see sales gains in both the month of August and 2019-to-date.
