fans holding out hope for Lauren Cohan’s Maggie to return to the series may be in luck. Showrunner Angela Kang hinted there may be plans to bring back Maggie in the near future.Cohan originally left The Walking Dead midway through Season 9, going on to star in the ABC series Whiskey Cavalier. But with ABC canceling Whiskey Cavalier this past May, many fans have wondered if this frees her up to reprise the role of Maggie again. Entertainment Weekly posed this question to Kang. “I’m not sure if I can say much about it right now actually,” Kang teased. “I’ll just say that we’re working on it.”
While certainly not confirmation, Kang’s comments do seem to at least indicate a desire on AMC’s part to bring Cohan back into the fold. Though as EW notes, there’s no telling whether that would involve an appearance on The Walking Dead proper, the upcoming spinoff movies or even the third Walking Dead series currently in production.
Any of these options are plausible given the open-ended way Maggie was written out of the series. The Season 9 episode “Stradivarius” established that Maggie is still alive following the series’ most recent time jump, having left the Hilltop with her young son Hershel to help the mysterious Georgie find other survivors and build new settlements.
At this point, the biggest hurdle to Maggie’s return may be Cohan herself. The actress previously indicated a desire to move on after eight years and seek new challenges. “Eight years is a really long time to be in those emotional depths,” Cohan told AP. “And it’s really fun for me because I never thought about drama as much when I started this career and I always kind of assumed I’d do like light fare.”

In other Walking Dead news, AMC cast the first three leads for the latest spinoff series. The network has also renewed The Walking Dead for Season 10. And the comic series delivered a major shock to readers, as it turns out The Walking Dead #193 is the series finale.
