The upcoming X-Men movie Dark Phoenix is not officially the final movie in the current series of mutant superhero movies, but big changes are expected for the franchise. While the film was shot before Disney’s purchase of Fox’s entertainment assets, it will be released by Disney, and the X-Men might end up becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The latest trailer for Dark Phoenix certainly suggests that this is the end of an era.
The first half of the new trailer recaps the past 19 years of the series. There’s clips from some of the first batch of movies in the 2000s, featuring Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellan, and Hugh Jackman, through to the rebooted casts of 2011’s X-Men: First Class and more recent films like X-Men: Apocalypse. The rest of the trailer mostly features clips from Dark Phoenix we’ve already seen in previous trailers, although there are a few new shots in there. Check it out below.
Dark Phoenix stars Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, who is transformed into a powerful villain that her former friends in the X-Men must stop. The film also sees the return of all the main characters from the past few movies, including Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Tye Sheridan, Olivia Munn, Alexandra Shipp, and Kodi Smit-Mcphee. It also features Jessica Chastain in a villainous role and is directed by Simon Kinberg and releases on June 7.
Even though the future of the main X-Men movies under Disney is unclear, there is technically another movie to come. New Mutants was shot back in early 2017, but has been delayed numerous times since. Last week Disney announced that it has moved back yet again, and will now arrive on April 3, 2020, more than two years after its first scheduled date. In March, star Maisie Williams revealed that planned reshoots were yet to take place–it is unknown if these will now occur before it finally gets here.
