“Awaken the power within.”
IGN can exclusively reveal the first official key art and premiere date for Starz’s upcoming supernatural spy thriller, The Rook. The series is set to debut on Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 8 p.m. ET/PT in the US and Canada, then on the STARZPLAY platform in Germany and Spain.
Based on the Daniel O’Malley novel of the same name, “The Rook is a supernatural spy thriller which tells the story of Myfanwy Thomas, a woman who wakes up in the rain beside London’s Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no way to explain the circle of latex-gloved dead bodies splayed around her. When Myfanwy discovers she is a high ranking official in the Checquy, Britain’s last truly secret service for people with paranormal abilities, she will have to navigate the dangerous and complex world of the agency to uncover who wiped her memory – and why she is a target,” according to a synopsis from Starz.
The show blends the paranormal abilities of the X-Men franchise with the tension of a spy thriller, as executive producer Stephen Garrett recently told reporters: “I think what drew us all to this is that it’s a spy show with supernatural elements. And the great thing about spy shows and why I think the British are good at them — you know, we obviously have done Bond, we’ve done le Carré — we’re naturally duplicitous; we’re very good at lying, and we love secrets. So if you’re a spy, you can’t tell your friends or your loved ones what it is you do. And I think if you have supernatural powers, you can’t tell your friends or your loved ones what it is you have. So, you have secrets to the power of ten. And that’s just a very heady mix for great drama and a very unusual combination.”
Here’s the official key art for the series featuring lead actress Emma Greenwell (Shameless).
The Rook features an impressive supporting cast, including Joely Richardson (Red Sparrow), Olivia Munn (The Predator), Adrian Lester (Riviera), Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Catherine Steadman (Downton Abbey), Jon Fletcher (Genius), Shelley Conn (The Lottery), and James D’Arcy (Agent Carter).
The series is adapted and co-produced by Sam Holcroft and Al Muriel, with Lisa Zwerling (FlashForward) and Karyn Usher (Prison Break) serving as co-showrunners and executive producers.
The Rook premieres on Starz on Sunday, June 30, 2019. Per Starz, “Liberty Global will simultaneously exclusively premiere the series on demand through certain of its European cable TV platforms, while Liberty Latin America will do the same in its markets in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
