What’s the deal with those new white suits the Avengers are wearing in Endgame? We have some theories!
Happy new Avengers: Endgame trailer day! While at first glance the new trailer might seem to be heavy on flashback footage from previous films, in fact there’s quite a bit to dig into here and speculate about. Which is, of course, half the fun of these movies. Take, for example, those new Avengers: Endgame white suits. What’s the deal with those things?
The reveal of the suits comes near the end of the trailer, as we see a bunch of Avengers marching through the hangar bay of their headquarters The Right Stuff style (which, by the way, was one of the VHS movies Captain Marvel checked out in that Blockbuster Video in her movie). A variety of Avengers — and at least one Guardian of the Galaxy — are donning the costumes, including Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, War Machine, Ant-Man and Nebula. (And yes, we know Ant-Man isn’t technically an Avenger in the MCU yet — though maybe he is by the time this scene takes place, as membership is definitely down since the Great Decimation).
Right off the bat there are several takeaways here: Iron Man and Nebula apparently make it back to Earth at some point, despite being stranded on Titan at the end of Infinity War (and Iron Man being stranded in space in the previous Endgame trailer). Also, Steve and Tony are working together again, which we haven’t seen since they’re split in Civil War. Also, Cap has shaved and Black Widow’s hair is read again! Also, Rhodey’s suit matches the look of the others’, but it’s still clearly a bulked-up “War Machine style” design.
There are several surviving Avengers and heroes not wearing the suits: Thor, Hulk, Rocket and Captain Marvel. Of course, these are the more space-worthy of the players, so perhaps they don’t need them or are travelling by some other means.
But indeed, at first glance it does seem that the idea of these white costumes is that they are more than just costume upgrades and some kind of space suits which will allow for the Avengers to meet Thanos face to face. He was last seen on some alien world smiling over his victory. Or perhaps it’s more likely that these are time-travel suits, as this trailer does feature a bunch of flashback footage and there have been plenty of rumors and apparent unofficial photos from the set which posit a time-travel solution to defeating Thanos. It’s also possible that the suits are somehow designed to allow for the team to travel into the Quantum Realm… Don’t forget that Ant-Man’s powers are based around wearing his suit, and travel to the Quantum Realm also requires the traveler to be protected by an external shell of some kind. There’s a line in Ant-Man and the Wasp about a time vortex in the Quantum Realm, so it’s entirely possible that the Avengers are travelling through time and space via the Quantum Realm. Also, for what it’s worth, Doctor Strange has been known to hang in the QR. Just saying.
This white suit design was leaked via some toy images (of course), so we kind of knew they were coming. But it’s also worth noting that the suits are reminiscent of the Iron Legion drones that Tony Stark designed back in Age of Ultron as a peacekeeping force… and which went horribly wrong when Ultron gained sentience. Maybe he recycled that tech to build these suits?
We’ll find out for sure when Avengers: Endgame hits on April 26!
