Captain Marvel premiered over the weekend and pulled in high box office numbers totaling $455 million worldwide.
The strong numbers pushed the first female-led Marvel film into the second slot of the highest-grossing MCU solo films since Black Panther.
Fans have been checking up on the previous most-recent female-led superhero film, Wonder Woman, in comparison. However, on Monday, Gal Gadot shared a fan design of Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman being pals together and said, “I’m so happy for you sister! Congrats” in bold letters on her Instagram story, reported by Buzzfeed.
The art was created by @maxyartwork on Instagram, who is known for her fandom illustrations.
Director of Wonder Woman and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984, Patty Jenkins, shared her support for Captain Marvel on Twitter before the premiere, saying, “Congratulations team Captain Marvel! Can’t wait to see it and our whole WW crew wish you a great weekend.” Along with sharing artwork from an artist who drew Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel together.
Female-led superhero movies in the MCU have been discussed for years, with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige going back publicly to 2014 saying he wanted more equal representation of genders on-screen.
Scarlett Johansson has been vocal about wanting a standalone Black Widow film for years, with it now finally confirmed to happen.
