Game of Thrones premieres on April 14.
Game of Thrones’ final season is featuring an inevitable climax seven seasons in the making: the living are going to finally face down with the dead. The newly released trailer for Season 8 features that final battle front and center, and offered viewers a good tease of which characters are going to make it to this long-awaited showdown.
This article contains spoilers only of what was released in the new trailer for Season 8, along with some previously released information about Game of Thrones, but those who want to enter the final season with no knowledge of what’s ahead should read on at their own risk.
It’s become clear that the fight between the Night King’s undead army and Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen’s forces will, fittingly, take place at Winterfell. The trailer sets up the battle sequence, which is being referred to as the Battle of Winterfell, in its final shots, with an undead horse hoof clomping down within sight of the Stark keep.
The Battle of Winterfell will be the “longest consecutive battle sequence ever committed to film,” according to a new report from Entertainment Weekly, and will feature the most main characters in the same place since Game of Thrones’ pilot. Here’s everyone we spotted in the trailer who are confirmed to be at Winterfell.
This one’s a no-brainer, but yes, Jon Snow has returned to Winterfell in Season 8. The real question is how long it will take after he’s gotten there to find out about his lineage. Maybe that’s why he’s down in the crypts with his aunt/lover in this shot…
Also a no-brainer, but pretty exciting that the Mother of Dragons herself is finally making it to Winterfell. Who would have thought, all those many years ago in the pilot when Daenerys was barely on anyone’s radar in Westeros, that she would one day make it here and bring dragons to the North.
We last left Arya at Winterfell, and here she stays in Season 8. Not only do we see her witnessing her first dragon in the trailer, but we also see her taking a part in the battle — which, strangely enough, is the first big battle sequence actress Maisie Williams will take part in on this show.
Sansa also is still at Winterfell, and the trailer doesn’t offer many insights into what role she’ll have to play in the actual battle. We do, however, see her getting a glimpse of her first dragon here as well.
If this trailer is to be believed, Sam and Bran didn’t stop talking since the two connected that Jon Snow is actually the legitimate heir of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen at the end of last season! Nice to know these two still are at Winterfell, and hopefully are readying to have The Talk with Jon.
Though he might be hard to make out, Bran is in the back of this shot with Samwell Tarly.
Grey Worm gets one of the coolest shots of the new Game of Thrones trailer as we see him standing in front of the Unsullied army, ready to lead them to war against the Night King and his army of the undead.
Though Missandei only gets limited screentime in this new trailer, we see her and Grey Worm share a passionate kiss before he, seemingly, heads off to fight the White Walkers.
It is bittersweet that Jorah Mormont has returned to again fight for the North after Ned Stark banished him for selling slaves many years ago. While he is here to fight for his Khaleesi, we do hope that Jorah ends up crossing paths with our other favorite Mormont, the young Lady of Bear Island Lyanna.
Davos clearly will have a key role to play in the battle. Here we see him pacing the battlements of Winterfell.
Varys has made it to Winterfell! But it looks like he won’t have a big hand in the fight. You can see him briefly in the trailer hiding out, seemingly during the battle, down in the Winterfell crypts.
In the background of this shot, you can see Gilly and baby Sam also hanging out in the crypts of Winterfell, hopefully staying very, very safe.
This shot of Gendry is so much more than meets the eye. We see Gendry hard at work in Winterfell’s forge, which means he almost certainly is cranking away at making Dragonglass weapons to fight against the Night King’s army. If you remember, Jon got a massive amount of Dragonglass back in Season 7, and Sam brought back plenty of knowledge about the rare substance from his days at Oldtown.
Blink-and-you-miss-it, but we do get a shot of the Hound at Winterfell in this trailer. Seems like he and the rest of the squad who headed to meet with Cersei Lannister at the end of Season 7 made it back safe and sound.
Brienne of Tarth
Toward the end of the trailer, we get a clear shot of Brienne standing at the front lines of the Winterfell army, awaiting the Night King’s arrival. We also get an awesome brief action shot of her earlier in the trailer fighting on some fiery battlements.
Standing next to Brienne is her trusty sidekick Pod, who we are oh-so-happy made it to this climactic moment in this series.
Last but not least, this shot very much seems like it’s Jaime Lannister fighting alongside the Winterfell army — especially since it matches the background aesthetic of the scenes of Brienne fighting. Considering his voice over says, “I promised to fight for the living. I intend to keep that promise” in this trailer, it makes sense that he would arrive at his intended destination and take up his sword to keep the threat of the Night King at bay.
Our hype level is clearly over 9000, but let us know in the comments: Who are you most excited to see fight in this epic showdown? And alternately, who do you expect won’t make it out alive?
