The Avengers know how to make an entrance.
While audiences are expecting quite a bit to happen in Avengers: Endgame, comic fans are hoping to see, or rather hear, one thing in particular: Captain America saying the iconic rallying phrase, “Avengers assemble!” The first time the Avengers formed on-screen during the Battle of New York, Cap didn’t need to say the words because the circle-round shot did a superb job showing the team assembling, so it would’ve been overkill to say it, director Joss Whedon explained at the time. While Whedon withheld the signature call-to-arms with the best of intentions then, he outright trolled fans at the end of Age of Ultron when the film abruptly ended just as the words were about to leave Cap’s lips. Now, with one Avengers film left to go before Chris Evans reportedly departs the role, what better time for Cap to finally deliver the goods?
To tide you over until Endgame, we thought it would be fun to highlight our favorite images of the Avengers assembling in the comic books.
Check out our picks and let us know your favorite “Avengers assemble!” moments in the comments below.
The First Assembly (The Avengers Vol. 1 #1)
Lineup: Giant-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, Thor & Wasp
This might not be the flashiest Avengers panel ever drawn, but it does mark the first time the team came together. This first issue initially saw Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and Wasp fight the misunderstood Hulk, but they quickly realized their true enemy was Loki and proceeded to give the trickster god a good, old-fashioned smackdown.
Chaos & Order (The Avengers Vol. 3 #60)
Lineup: Ant-Man, Black Panther, Captain America, Falcon, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Namor, Scarlet Witch, She-Hulk, Thor, Wasp & Yellowjacket
This image showcases the Avengers at their most classic, with a familiar lineup of powerhouse heroes combining to confront a threat greater than any of them could face alone. In this case, the Avengers were in the midst of battle against the cosmic entity known as the In-Betweener and the then-current incarnation of Scorpio.
The Zombie Avengers (Marvel Zombies: Dead Days #1)
Lineup: Black Widow, Colonel America, Hawkeye, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel & Wasp
Normally the sight of the Avengers is cause for rejoicing. Not so in the Marvel Zombies universe, where all of Marvel’s heroes and villains eventually fall victim to a zombie plague. This Dead Days one-shot explored the initial outbreak of the virus and the quick, brutal fall of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
X-Men vs. Avengers (Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #7)
Lineup: Captain America, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Ms. Marvel, Quicksilver, Spider-Man, Wolverine & Wonder Man
Months before Avengers vs. X-Men soured relations between the two teams, Avengers: The Children’s Crusade introduced a major conflict as the Scarlet Witch finally resurfaced. Even Magneto joined the fray. Thanks to Jim Cheung’s sleek pencils, the two groups of heroes have rarely looked this good.
Building an Avengers World (The Avengers Vol. 5 #2)
Lineup: Cannonball, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Captain Universe, Falcon, Hyperion, Manifold, Shang-Chi, Smasher, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman, Sunspot & Wolverine
The current volume of Avengers opened with a smaller roster modeled after the first movie. That team only lasted one issue before they were defeated on Mars and Captain America was forced to return home to seek out reinforcements. His new team consisted both of familiar faces and several new additions to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. With this splash page, it was clear that a new day was dawning for the Avengers.
