This Endgame was in the works for years.
One of the biggest mysteries in the geek community has finally been solved. We now know that Avengers 4 is officially titled “Avengers Endgame.” Perhaps not the most glamorous title in the MCU, but it gets the point across. And more importantly, it turns out that Marvel has been teasing this title for several years now.
Here’s a look back at all the clues towards the title of Avengers 4, dating all the way back to 2015.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Shortly after Ultron first manifests itself in this movie, the Avengers have a heated argument over whether it was such a good idea for Tony and Bruce to build a hyper-intelligent A.I. system with near-unlimited power. As friends do from time to time. Tony’s justification for designing Ultron is to reference his near-death experience at the end of the first Avengers movie and the unknown threat posed by enemies from other worlds. Tony says, “That up there. That’s the endgame. How were you guys planning on beating that?”.
Even then, Tony knew that there was a greater danger threatening the planet, and that the Avengers probably wouldn’t be able to stop it when the time came. He might not have understood the shape of that threat at the time, but he recognized that the endgame was fast approaching.
This scene is also significant because Steve promises Tony that they’ll stop the threat “together.” The Avengers failed in Infinity War precisely because they were still divided. This is a reminder that only by coming together as a team can Earth’s Mightiest Heroes avenge their world.
Avengers: Infinity War
A more obvious tease towards the Avengers: Endgame title came in the climax of Infinity War. Shortly before the battle with Thanos on Titan, Doctor Strange is shown peering into approximately 14 million future timelines, seeking the one outcome where Earth’s heroes actually win. After the battle, Strange’s justification for handing over the Time Stone is to say, “We’re in the endgame now.”
The Endgame title is meant to be reassuring, in a way. As bleak as things look, with the Avengers still divided and half of all life in the universe simply gone, this is all part of Strange’s plan. He saw that the only way to stop Thanos in the end is to let him have his victory now. He was the only one to see what was coming before the Decimation happened, and the survivors are simply living out his vision in this sequel.
The Russo Brothers Teaser
A couple months back, the Russo Brothers tweeted a cryptic set photo with the tagline “Look hard…” Fans assumed this seemingly innocuous glimpse behind the scenes contained a hidden clue as to the plot or title of Avengers 4. And as it turns out, it sort of did.
In hindsight, it’s obvious that the set was arranged in a very specific way so that objects formed the shape of letters. There are several obvious A’s in the image, but also at least two objects that could be E’s. Some fans are even convinced the background objects spell out “Endgame.” We can’t decide if the Russos specifically planned that in-depth, but they definitely seemed to be teasing the Endgame reveal in this photo.
