Higher… Furrier… Faster…
Update: The second trailer for Captain Marvel has revealed that the titular hero’s cat is indeed in the movie… but it looks like the pet has a new name that’s different from the one in the comics.
In the new trailer, we see Nick Fury look at the cat’s name tag, which says “Goose” — obviously a Top Gun reference, considering Carol Danvers is an ex-fighter pilot herself.
Add to that the recent reveal that toys from the film feature Goose, and we now know that the cat’s name is no longer Chewie like it was in the comics.
The MCU version of Goose/Chewie first appeared in the official poster released this past September. As noted by the eagle-eyed reporters over at Vulture at the time, there seemed to be a strange, furry figure hanging out off to the far-left edge of the poster, exiting the image away from Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel.
The prevailing theory was that this figure was, in fact, Chewie, Captain Marvel’s alien cat. In the comics, when Carol Danvers left Earth, she took what she thought was her cat Chewie with her. When the two eventually met Rocket Raccoon from Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket attempted to kill Chewie, correctly identifying it as part of the dangerous alien species known as the Flerken.
Though Captain Marvel insisted Chewie was just a regular house cat, Chewie eventually laid over a hundred eggs, letting the cats out of the bag. Flerken are capable of teleportation, jutting poisonous tentacles out of their mouths, and have human-level intellect. They just happen to look like cats.
Although there’s no word on what powers Goose/Chewie will or will not have in the film, there is plenty we know about Captain Marvel.
