Best Back to School Laptops

Dell G5 15 Gaming

Dell G5 15 Gaming

A gaming PC is great for college, whether you’re majoring in graphic design or engineering, it’s a great way to justify that extra power. The Dell G5 15 starts at a GTX 1050 but can be upgraded all the way to a 1060 6GB. Perfect for graphics-heavy school applications, but maybe gaming, if you have any spare time. At around $1000, it’s a great combination of modest power at a reasonable price.

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop

School is a lot of work, there’s no question. But there are also pretty significant chunks of time when you’re not working. That time is perfectly suited for gaming, and this Acer laptop is a perfect way to game. With an Intel i7-7700HQ CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, and GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU, this is a powerful laptop for anyone’s needs.

MacBook Air

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air is one of the best laptops for students, thanks to its excellent build quality and barely-there weight and size. When it comes to graphics, a PC will almost always trounce a comparably priced Mac, but if you’re in a liberal arts school and you show up to class with anything but a Mac, people might question your commitment to artistry.

New Dell G3 17

TombRaider

New Dell G3 17

Dell’s added a new line of gaming laptops to its stable of already solid machines. But don’t think this is just a gaming laptop, it’s a powerful computer with tons of great uses outside of playing Fortnite on Ultra. The base model comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 4GB, but it tops out at a GTX 1060 GB.

Dell G3 Gaming

Dell G3 Gaming

This might be the perfect balance between fun and functionality. It won’t have any problem running applications you might need for your classes, and it won’t have any problems running modern games, either. With an Intel Core i7-8750H, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, this is a great addition to your school needs.

Lenovo Ideapad 330

ddlenovo330

Lenovo Ideapad 330

For getting things done, the Lenovo Ideapad is an excellent choice. With an Intel Core i3-8130 CPU and 4GB RAM, it can technically run Fortnite, but we’ve mainly included it here because at just $300 it makes excellent school computer that will get your classwork in order without a huge price tag.

Lenovo Ideapad 330s

Lenovo Ideapad 330s

A step above the 330, this one bumps up the processor to an Intel Core i5-8250U, giving you more power to handle some heavier applications, but without cranking up the price too much.

Dell Inspiron 15 5000

Dell Inspiron 15 5000

This is a pretty powerful convertible, and I’m personally a big fan of the 2-in-1 laptop. You get the best of both worlds without sacrificing the functionality of either. Plus, if your class textbook happens to come in a digital version, reading it on a 2-in-1 in tablet mode is just the best.

HP OMEN Intel Core

HP OMEN Intel Core

Here’s the first well-priced 8th gen Intel Hexacore laptop computer I’ve seen that isn’t from Dell. The HP OMEN has great build quality and boasts a 15-inch 1080p IPS display, Intel Core i7-850H 6-core processor, 16GB RAM, dual drives (256GB SSD + 1TB HDD), and GeForce GTX 1060 6GB graphics.

Best Back to School Desktop Computers

While laptops are certainly convenient, a dorm or bedroom desktop is a great choice for increased power and the ability to easily upgrade components, should the need arise. If you already have an iPad or Surface with a keyboard for class notes, a desktop could be a good Fall investment.

Dell XPS Tower Special Edition

XPSTowerSE

Dell XPS Tower Special Edition

An understated desktop with some slick specs, the base model has a GTX 1050 Ti, but you can bump that up all the way to a GTX 1080 8GB, if that’s your thing. Think of all the… school work… you can get done with that kind of power.

New Inspiron Desktop

New Inspiron Desktop

A desktop is a great way to save a ton of money on a computer, and this New Inspiron Desktop from Dell is small in both price and stature. Seriously, it’s tiny, so it’s a great choice when space is already at a premium, as is often the case in a dorm room. They start at just $299, too, which is a great deal.

If you have a desktop, you’re going to need a monitor. And even if you have a laptop, a monitor can make a big difference, especially if you’re taking visual arts classes, or just want that extra screen real estate.

Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor

AlienwareMonitor

Alienware 25 Gaming Monitor

One of the best monitors around, it’s almost always on sale, it looks incredible and style-wise it makes a statement, too. This monitor has a native 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, making it an amazing gaming monitor, but you can type up papers on it, too. FAST papers! OK, so… maybe thing isn’t super justifiable for a college student and maybe you should only consider it if you’ll be grinding out Counter-Strike matches in the evenings but hey, this is IGN. It’s what we do.

LG25

LG 25UM58-P 25-Inch 21:9 UltraWide IPS Monitor

Ultra-wide monitors aren’t just for gaming. They’re awesome for multitasking. All that screen means you can have tons of documents and windows open without needing to tab or window back and forth between them. This is also a competent gaming monitor, for those times you aren’t buried under work.

Mackie CR3 CR Series 3-inch Speakers

Speakers

Mackie CR3 CR Series 3-inch Speakers

Built-in speakers, whether in a laptop or monitor, are almost universally terrible. You can’t be expected to study without quality music, and if you’re gaming or watching movies, to you really want to suffer the hollow, tin-can sounds of built-in speakers? Of course not.

Consider these other PC speakers:

While laptops have track pads already built-in, and most desktops include some manner of mouse packed in the box, they are all hot trash. Get yourself a great wireless mouse, like the Logitech G305. You will thank me.
